This page has been accessed 147 times.

The goal of this project is to study the Origin, Meaning, or Galin Surname, discovering variation and what the name might have changed from, depending on what area used, after immigration to USA. Trace timline for the name, first appearence, popularity, orginal location as far back as possible, and change goals for project as thins evolve. Also, to have support/community for those researching this rare surname.

Right now this project just has one member, me. I am Mercedes McVey.

Here are some of the tasks that I think need to be done. I'll be working on them, and could use your help.

  • Developing a list of the surname and locations it's found
  • Developing a list of the surname and it's variations
  • Locating orgin of the surname & places it's found

Researching "meaning," of surname

Unfortunately I never met my grandfather Sam or his family. He was briefly married to my grandmother and my dad was not raised by him and met him only once. Interestingly, on his draft card he lists my fathers name as the person who would always know where he lived. He's quite the Mystery, was ver much a loner, never married again, and although I was told he had family here, and did seeminly keep in touch with at least one of his brothers, (who died many years before he passed,) he died alone in a hospital in Oak Forest. It must have been ruled a suspicious death, because an autopsy was performed. It lists parents, occupation, where born, etc. UNKNOWN. He was buried in a paupers grave/unmarked, in Oak Forest Cemetary, his body unclaimed. Cause of death was cerebreal hemorage, factors that contributed were hypertenstion. He worked in the Stockyards on the South Side of Chicago as a carpenter.

I decided to creat this project when I was SEARCHING-(dead-ended) for INFO., ADVICE, IDEAS for Finding my Grandfather & Family: Sam Galin, or Samuel Peter/Piotr Galin, (Maybe from Galinis, Galinski, Galinsky before immigration to South Side of Chicago. Born: WIDZE, ,Widzy Nova Alexandro, Poland or Widzie, Russian Occupied Poland. Brother Waclaw/Walter Galin, & possibly, Frank Galinis-Galin. Parents; Vincent Galin, b.d.abt. 1859 Micha?ina Gazanek/Gasenec/Gasienica abt.1861. Waclaw's daughter Irene Galin born USA 1922 in Chicago. Can anyone look up records in this area? I think it is modern day Belarus, or being Polish, but found in Lithuianian Archives. Any help or advice, ideas, etc. would be a blessing! Or know how to find a Parish? Pos. R.C. or Orthodox.
